Destinations For Adventurous Couples

Are you bored of the usual recommendations for couples' destinations? Climbing the Eiffel Tower is uninteresting. A gondola ride in Venice sounds dull. You'd rather stay at home than go to The Big Apple.

We hear you. Instead of the stereotypical romantic hotspots, let us inspire you with some beautiful destinations across the globe which are perfect for you and your loved one.

Top 7 Alternative Couples Destinations

Embrace your adventurous side and explore somewhere brand new with this list of our top seven unexpectedly adrenaline-inducing vacation spots.

1. Finland

Cold and crisp days adventuring in the snow is what Finland is all about. Imagine being on a sledge in the middle of winter and flying through the snow, pulled by your own team of huskies. One of the best ways to see Finland is on husky safari, which you learn to drive yourself across up to 50km of Finnish wilderness. Or if you prefer to be in complete control, go on a snowshoeing or cross-country skiing trip into the trees and across the hills. For the adrenaline-seekers, a snowmobile safari will take you to some of the most remote parts of the great snowy outdoors.

After all that, picture this: romantic cosy nights in the evening with a fire roaring and lots of blankets. For those quieter days, relax by visiting a Finnish Spa and sauna. At night, marvel at the Northern Lights. Finland is full of adventure and magic; where better to go with your other half than a winter wonderland.

2. Kyoto, Japan

This is definitely one for the tree and flower lovers. Come in the springtime and you will see the beauty of the Cherry Blossoms in Kyoto. Travel + Leisure named Kyoto the best city in the world twice in a row and it's no surprise: it has amazing food, temples and culture. Plan a visit during festival time and see the blooms during the last week of March and first two weeks of April. It's hard to predict when these fickle blossoms will peak but anytime in those three weeks is best. The best spots to check out the blooms are Philosophers Path, Maruyama Park, Heiam Shrine - just to name a few!

Avoid Arashiyama as you’ll have to wade through a sea of bodies. Instead, hike up Mt. Kurama to Kurama Temple and step into Japanese mythology and healing. The natural hot springs are also a must-see.

3. The Pacific Coast Highway, California USA

Do you think that renting an RV and driving across The United States is just for old couples? Think again. Stop to hike beneath giant redwoods, try to find the native elk and deer, or head to the coast for that Instagram shot, all whilst cruising in a rented airstream. The Pacific Coast Highway stretches 1000 kilometres which takes around 10 hours to travel – but why not take 7 days to stop and take in the sights?

For instance, the Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve are the perfect place to stop for a caving adventure. The park’s marble caves were formed by rainwater over hundreds of thousands of years. Or if you prefer to stay above ground, the Pinnacles National Park nears the Salinas Valley is popular with hikers and rock climbers.

4. Santorini, Greece

Relax and put your feet up with a stunning view from a villa, or hike through the beautiful landscape and countryside on Santorini, one of Greece’'s most beautiful islands. With its warm climate and beautiful white and blue landscape, it’ an annual spot for couples that is one of the most relaxing in the world. It's not all about lying in the sun, though. Swimming in the Mediterranean sea and exploring the seaside towns will certainly tire you out.

5. Kerala or Munnar, India

Okay, we're cheating a bit and cramming two destinations into one, forgive us. India is an adventure for most people but if you’re looking something special, Kerala or Munnar needs to be on your bucket list. Trek to Meesapulimalai, Munnar, which is the second highest peak in India, and camp in the hills together. Tea-lovers should head to the Tea Gardens of Wayanad to spend a day in the cloudy hills. Plus, make sure to seek out the fresh seafood on offer when you’’re in Kerala– you won’t regret it!

6. Positano, Italy

With the rugged coastline and colourful fishing villages that are built straight into the cliffside, Positano is one of the Amalfi Coast's most popular destinations. How does sunshine, clear waters and beautiful beaches sound to you? Positano is the perfect place for you and your significant other to slow down and explore somewhere new. Instead of planning ahead, just be spontaneous and see what you can find when you meander the stunning streets down to the sea. If you only do one thing (other than eat) whilst you’re there, go sea kayaking in the gorgeous blue waters. At the end of the day, find a rooftop patio and share a bottle of prosecco and some authentic Italian pasta.

7. Savannah, Georgia, United States

Perhaps you didn’t expect to see Georgia on our list but don’t underestimate the Southern State. It is filled with history, charm, delicious foods and beautiful gardens. Savannah's food is a rich mix of origins. Try dishes like Crab Stew, Gravy and Grits, BBQ Brisket, and Ribs from Championship BBQ. Visit any one of Savannah’’s 24 square parks for a run or even some yoga, and pack a picnic for you and your significant other. Pack a volleyball and net to finish off your trip with a beach day on Tybee Island, only 20 minutes away from Savannah's historic district.
