Switzerland is arguably one of the most beautiful countries in the world, with its scenic landscapes, mountainous backdrops and shimmering lakes that glisten in the bright sunshine. Whether it’s summer or winter, there’s an abundance of things to see and do in Switzerland, making it the perfect country for both hot and cold holidays. Being one of the world’s most beautiful countries undoubtedly comes with a price though, and it’s no secret that Switzerland is hugely expensive and very unaffordable, no matter what time of year you travel. However, I’ve found that travelling by train is definitely the cheapest way of exploring the country and it’s the best way of getting around too! Here’s a few reasons why…
You Can Get Supersaver Tickets
This is probably the most valuable tip I can give you, so make the most of it! Make sure you buy your train tickets in advance, rather than on the day at the station, and when you’re looking online search for SUPERSAVER tickets to get the cheapest prices. Simply head to www.SBB.ch and select SUPERSAVER – I saved up to 50% on my tickets, and with multiple trains running every single day, there’s plenty of opportunity to grab a bargain!
There Are No Luggage Restrictions
This is why I would always choose train travel instead of flying, where possible. It’s hassle free, there’s no need to turn up 2 hours before departure, and you can bring as much luggage as you like! I had a suitcase and a large bag with me when I travelled, and it was so nice to spread my things out on a double seat and not feel restricted on my 2 hour journey.
They’re Very Frequent
Like a well oiled machine, the Swiss train travel system runs smoothly every single day. With hundreds of trains running across the entire country hour after hour, you won’t have long to wait before you can hop on and take your journey to anywhere.
They’re Super Comfy And Spacious
As well as the unlimited luggage restrictions, the carriages on Swiss trains offer lots of comfort. I was lucky because on both of my journeys the trains were pretty empty so I didn’t have to share my seat with anyone and was able to stretch out and relax. During peak times this may be different, but the trains have so many carriages that I don’t think they ever get cramped and crowded like our great British ones do back home!
The Views Are INSANE
My favourite thing about my journeys were the incredible views; I was able to just sit back with my belongings, relax and enjoy the scenes out my window. I travelled from Geneva to Sion and witnessed beautiful mountains, enormous lakes and little towns that looked like they had come straight out of a fairy tale! There’s a reason Switzerland is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and exploring it by train makes for the most picture perfect experience.
So there we have it, just a few reasons why train travel is THE best way to explore Switzerland. I hopped between two large cities whilst I was exploring this beautiful country last month and it was definitely the best way to get around. I managed to get super saver tickets, find a quiet carriage with plenty of space for my ever growing luggage, and was able to sit back and enjoy the most amazing views during my 4hour round trip journeys. I’ll definitely be opting to use trains next time I go to Switzerland and already can’t wait to return!
