It’s 2019 and we’re ready to get inspired to travel. Where better to turn than to the bloggers and vloggers who are travelling all over the world, sharing their experiences and allowing us so much insight into our dream destinations?
However, how do we know who to trust?
Can I trust bloggers’ recommendations?
Influencer fraud is a highly debated topic in the world of marketing right now as more and more so-called influence have been buying and lying about the number of followers they’re actually influencing. Steven Bartlett, CEO and founder of Social Chain, described this in October as the biggest scam in marketing.
But why should you care? You’re just looking for some inspiration and maybe a review so you have some more information about where your next vacation should be.
This is how we see it: how can you trust the recommendation of someone who pays for up to 95% of their followers and comments? They’re clearly in it for the money and exposure, not to genuinely offer you honest advice. There seems to be a new scandal every week involving
This is more common than you’d think. A lot of people are buying followers and comments so that brands will work with them and send them on free trips. They then write good reviews, regardless of whether their experience was genuinely good.
So we’ve rounded up the travel bloggers and vloggers we think you should be following in 2019 for authentic, entertaining and creative content. Of course, this list isn't exhuastive so we'd love to hear about people you love to follow!
1. Pip from Pip and the City
We love Pip! Her blog is full of inspiration for affordable luxury and travel inspiration which has made us add a few UK countryside spots to our bucket lists. She’s such a sweetheart and is always up for a chat on Twitter. You won’t find a more genuine travel blogger right now.
2. Irine from Travel With Irine
What drew us to the Travel With Irine blog first was her stunning photography. If you haven’t checked out her Instagram, do it now. They’re the kind of photos which are stunning and beautiful, but don’t look fake or over-edited. Community, diaspora and storytelling are at the centre of her blog. Plus, her recent posts about hiking in the US have motivated us to dust off our walking boots and get outdoors again.
3. Gemma and Campbell from Highlands2Hammocks
This blogging couple just prove that if you work hard, you can end up doing the one thing you love with the person you love. If you’re travelling on a budget, this is the blog for you. We recommend reading their story on the about page, as it just makes you realise that if you’re a bit smarter about your money, there’s no reason why you couldn’t do the same.
4. Chris and Rob from 2 Travel Dads
Be warned that you should only follow their Instagram account if you’re prepared for cuteness overload. Chris and Rob’s two kids are the most adorable little humans we’ve ever seen. It’s wonderful to see how they’re using travel as a form of education and showing how to use bravery to stand up to bullying.
5. Ian from The Barefoot Backpacker
This is a blog which will not just inspire, but One thing we love about Ian’s blog is the honesty in every single post. His storytelling about Cambodia is breathtaking and will keep you hooked.
6. Maria from One Tiny Leap
Parents will adore delving into this little corner of the internet. Maria inspires other families with kids to make the most of their time and explore the world. Their little family of three is a joy to read about. If you need a bit of a kickstart to book that family vacation in 2019, this is the blog for you. With advice, recommendations and reassurance that you’re doing the right thing, this is the ultimate parents’ guide to travel.
7. Kristen from Hopscotch the Globe
Kristen and Siya have been on YouTube since 2010 sharing their adventures. Not only do they have some great hacks and cool videos about their renovated Airstream, but there is also plenty of funny content to entertain you. Also, their newborn is adorable so we’re excited to see how that influences their travel plans for 2019 and onwards.
